During the Meiji Era and onward Japanese women as well as the men started to adapt Western style cloths.

Up until the Meiji era (1868-1912), Ohaguro, the practice of blackening one’s teeth was popular.

It was once a fashion for men and women, especially during the Heian period. It was at one point used on young girls for their coming of age. Later for married and older women. Also used by prostitutes and geisha.

Blackening of teeth is thought to go back as far as the Kofun period (250-538).

Now… can you imagine this being a normal practice in your life?
